The Reflected Eye: producing and installing 60 pleximount prints for one of the largest NYC photography shows of 2015
It was February 2015 and winter was in full swing. We were sitting in our first NYC pop-up gallery late one Sunday and in walked a creative director from the NYC-based creative agency Totem Creative. We had a long talk with him about the history and future of print, and how smartphones were changing everything. He mentioned he had a colleague who had a passion for all things photography, and who was putting together a large exhibit in May. The premise was to “turn the camera around”, and to show photographs of famed photographers taking shots of themselves. In other words, the predecessor to the selfie.
A few weeks later we touched base with our new friends over at Totem to find out if there was a way we could assist with this exciting show. After some discussion about the scope of the exhibit, we determined that there would be 60 pleximounts, each approximately 20″x24″ large. We determined we would make these pleximounts with Hahnemuhle Photo Pearl pigment prints face mounted to matte plexiglass with aluminum backings and wood braces. And so began our involvement in The Reflected Eye project.
After a few weeks of production, both printing and mounting, we had the pleximounts ready to install. So we dropped off all 60 prints and sent over our install crew to get started on a weekend-long installation.
The project was a collaboration between Dune Studios and Totem Creative. Its goal was to celebrate pioneering fashion photographers throughout history.
Dune Studios is a beautiful, 3-floor photography studio on Varick Street on NYC. Its walls are a combination of brick, cement and plaster, so our install team came prepared with a few different drill bits and screws.
Given the large body of work which was being installed on only a few walls, proper measurements were critical to ensuring a perfect composition.
While installing we keep the glassine protective paper on the prints. Only once the install is complete do we remove them.
After a couple days of installing we go back and triple-check the prints to make sure they are perfectly level.
By the end of the weekend the prints went up, and on the night of Tuesday, May 19th the guests came to see the show!
It was a great event, with attendees from across the fashion and creative industries.
The Reflected Eye got a great turnout and the show went on for 3 months. When the show was finally scheduled to be taken down we returned to Dune for a couple days of deinstallation and secure packaging, so that they could be safely shipped to their next destination!
